Scab
The gay vampire movie Scab, which did the festival circuit a few years ago, has not yet been released on dvd, except oddly enough in France. If you are lucky enough to get your hands on a copy and have a way to view Region 2 dvds, I highly recommend the film.
Here’s the synopsis:
West Hollywood. 2:40 AM. Ajay and a one-night stand swap spit. But instead of using Ajay’s hole, the one-night stand makes new ones of his own. Left with a bug no antibiotic can quell, Ajay slips off the radar and into a sloppy quest for food. After several days of incommunicado, Teague (the requisite geek who unrequitedly loves Ajay) and Floor (a straight-boy friend), check in on Ajay. Ajay looks like warmed-over death. Ajay uses Teague’s sympathy to drag him and Floor to Las Vegas (and away from an excessively sloppy kill).
Just outside of Vegas the boys meet Briar, a cynical girl who runs the desolate motel where the boys set up shop. Not long after the boys arrive, Sarah (bitchy and slutty) and Tia (spineless yet cute) mark the necessary arrival of the sorority stereotypes. The stage is set for the shit to hit the fan.
Harmony Motel. Outskirts of Vegas. 4:26 AM. Three days later. Fueled by lust, hunger, desperation, and repulsion the situation viciously unfurls. The blood of (slightly) innocent bystanders is let. Faith and beliefs are tested. Bodies lie heaped. Vampire attacks newly spawned vampire. And as the sun rises that fourth morning the old adage rings true: that motherfucker misery loves company.
I’m not the most patient person, and so on a recent trip to Paris I picked up a copy which has subtitles in French, but retains the original English soundtrack. TLA Video has been advertising "coming soon" for the US release for months, which is progress considering the film was made in 2004.
Throughout the film here is plenty of fang action, buckets of blood and some cute victims. Compared to saw the gay horror movie Hellbent (not vampire related), Scab is far superior. Although I didn’t find the film scary, it was a refreshing approach to vampires.
